Our History
In October of 1921, the Slater Chemical Fire Company in Glenham, NY was
born. Glenham was a tiny portion of the Town of Fishkill, NY.
The establishment of the fire company in Glenham allowed for the
extinguishment of fires in the Town for the first time. There were no
water lines or hydrants in Glenham or the Town of Fishkill. Therefore,
it was decided that a foam type apparatus would be the most suitable for
Glenham. The name Slater Chemical Fire Company was chosen in honor of
Jesse Slater, a Glenham boy who died in World War I.
In 1932, the Town of Fishkill established the Glenham Water District which
allowed for water lines and hydrants to be laid out. Now that Glenham
had water and hydrants, the Town Board of the Town of Fishkill proposed for
a fire district to be established. In October of 1934, the Glenham
Fire District was established and several Commissioners were appointed to
the District. The Commissioners first duty was to purchase a new
apparatus. Although the country was in the depths of The Great
Depression, they went for the top of the line and bought a 1936 American
LaFrance pumper. The pumper was admired by all of Glenham and helped
the District get on its feet. Since then, many members and generations
of the District and Fire Company have contributed to help make it what it
has become today.
